Chris Carter came to the hafla and painted some of the performers, as part of an ongoing study/series/experience/movement she calls Zakar. She’s in the process of scanning the paintings, and sent us this lovely one of Rag Tag in group formation. In full diclosure, she’s my Mom, and you should check out her site as well as her blog, she has some beautiful work up there. Lately I’m particualry drawn to her watercolors from her recent trip to France. Here is a link to some other bellydance paintings that she has done under the Zakar umbrella, mostly with the studio in Easton that she attends. (Dancers from Easton Yoga were also at Spring Caravn. I always find it fun to meet people through dance who have heard of or know my mother through her painting of dancers).
The weekend was a blur, full of dancing. Hipnosis hosted the lovely Zafira for two days of workshops and a night of performance. Rag Tag represented on Saturday, with Ang and Nicole at the workshops, and a beautiful solo by Laura at the Bellyjam. Nothing like taking workshops with really talented dancers to remind a dancer how much more there is to learn! Hipnosis couldn’t have found a better location for the weekend, the Elkins Estate is amazing. A huge old marble mansion, surrounded by grounds that make spring really worth it. It seemed like all the people involved with the estate were really great people, and I’d definately reccomend it for anyone looking to have a wedding or other huge event.
Sunday brought another performance at Studio 1831, our home base. All available Rag Taggers were joined by their lovely, patient and invaluable teacher Michelle, who started out the number with a really great solo. The night was full of local dancers showing off their moves, including some sword swollowing by the always-impressive Kiri.
Next up, Spring Caravan. Workshops, practicing, shopping, performing…. it promises to be quite a weekend.
